Muni University Recognized with Major Continental Award

Arua-based Muni University is among five African institutions that have received a substantial prize of $3 million each (approximately Shs11.7 billion) under a new initiative aimed at transforming higher education across the continent. This award celebrates institutions making significant strides in skills development, research, innovation, and community impact.

Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHEFT) Prize

Muni University was selected for the inaugural Africa Higher Education for Transformation (AHEFT) Prize, an initiative designed to foster impactful changes in tertiary education. The university was recognized alongside institutions from Rwanda, Ethiopia, Ghana, and Burkina Faso, highlighting its growing influence in the African higher education landscape.

Focus on Community Engagement and Skills

The award acknowledges Muni University's commitment to extending its reach beyond campus walls. Vice Chancellor Assoc Prof Simon Katrini Anguma emphasized the need for universities to engage with their communities to remain relevant, stating, "The future of African universities is not within our walls alone; it is also in our communities."

Broader Goals of the AHEFT Initiative

The AHEFT Prize is part of a larger $500 million commitment to support at least 150 African institutions over the next decade. The initiative seeks to strengthen the links between education, employment, research, and economic development, encouraging universities to develop curricula with employers and invest in emerging technologies.

Driving Innovation and Economic Growth

The Mastercard Foundation, a key backer of the prize, views higher education reform as crucial for economic development. Sewit Ahderom, president and CEO of the foundation, noted that the transformation of higher education should be measured by its contribution to the wider economy, preparing young Africans for the evolving world of work.

Addressing Investment Gaps

Discussions at the award ceremony also highlighted concerns about the current levels of investment in higher education and research across Africa. Representatives from the African Union pointed to the need for increased funding and greater collaboration among universities to foster the movement of knowledge and innovation.
